Sometimes the most difficult aspect of weight loss is the part that follows: keeping the weight off. Many people put a strategy in place for losing the weight, but neglect to plan for what comes next. Transitioning off the method or plan that helped you lose the weight and developing a strategy for weight maintenance, is the key to long-term success.
Life after weight loss on the 5 & 1 Plan starts with Transition, a six-week program that paves the way for you to make your transformation permanent! You’ll increase your calorie intake gradually and reintroduce a wider variety of foods to your meal plan. Transition is a bridge between weight loss and weight maintenance, giving your body time to adjust to new foods. It’s also a great time to learn. So you don’t want to skip it!
As you add whole grains, low-fat dairy, and fruits, you’re learning what serving sizes should look like and which food choices are the most healthy. These principles carry over into maintenance, which makes this a great time to practice them.
For a successful six weeks, follow the Transition Chart and these six Transition tips:
1.Continue to eat every 2-3 hours. Small, frequent meals help the body work efficiently and keep you from overeating later in the day.
2. Stay hydrated. Remember the 64 ounces of water during the 5 & 1 Plan? Keep practicing that healthy habit!
3. Eat mindfully. Eat slowly. Take sips of water or put down your fork between bites. Savor the experience of eating by taking the time to appreciate the colors on your plate and the smell and texture of your food.
4. Be active. Physical activity is instrumental in preventing weight regain. So don’t wait for Maintenance; start being active now. All forms of physical activity count, so whether it’s a workout at the gym or an extra lap around the store, commit to being active daily.
5. Keep a Food Journal. Food journals, whether online or on paper, have shown to be effective in creating awareness of our eating practices and behaviors. They are a great way to start off on the right foot during maintenance.
6. Maintain your Support System. You’ll need it in Maintenance. Whether it’s a healthcare professional, online Medifast community, family member, or friend, find someone who will encourage and inspire you on your journey to lifelong health.
You’re ready to make the most of Transition. Apply what you’ve already learned, and reflect on the outcomes. You’re almost there! The Maintenance phase is just around the corner!
