Men’s Health and Mustaches

If you notice some of the men around you growing out their mustaches during the month of November and find yourself wondering “why?” well then I am here to tell you all about Movember. According to their website the “Movember Foundation is a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. Since 2003, millions have joined the men’s health movement, raising $650 million and funding over 1,000 programs focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.” This means that for the entire month of November, men everywhere are growing out their mustaches in order to raise awareness of men’s health issues. And for the third year in a row, I’m getting in on the hairy lipped action.

Men are facing a number of very serious health concerns that are impacted by their lifestyles. Just a few of the staggering statistics include: One American man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes and about 380 men will die of testicular cancer, on average 87 men in America each day take their life by suicide, and approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to insufficient physical activity. These facts are truly sobering however what’s incredible is that each of these issues can be improved or prevented by living a healthy lifestyle. By choosing a healthy diet, exercising most days of the week, maintaining a healthy weight, and talking to their doctor, men can drastically improve their health and reduce their risk for developing these life threatening illnesses.

So, for the men out there let’s get healthy and grow out our mustaches in support of men’s health. And for the women, you can get in on the action too by encouraging the men in your life to get healthy, grow out a mustache, and most importantly talk to their doctor.
