The Manly Art of Healthy Weight Loss

Man-PinchingBelly

Calling all men: if you find yourself blaming the dryer for shrinking your waistband, it’s well worth your while to do something about it.

It’s not so much about vanity, either, guys.

Even if your wife loves you just fine with a little “spare tire,” it’s smart to take control before that spare tire starts affecting your well-being. If your doctor has mentioned your weight, that’s a good sign that it’s time to take action.

Too much belly fat is associated with the “metabolic syndrome,” which involves high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol. Together, these risk factors make heart disease much more likely*.

Excess weight puts a strain on the joints of your hips, knees, and feet, which can make it more difficult to exercise and stay fit. Over time, the combination of eating more and moving less can cause your weight to spiral out of control.

Your wife isn’t imagining it: It really is easier for men to lose weight than it is for women—unfair, but true, since men’s bodies don’t need a layer of fat to protect a growing baby. (You may not want to talk about this too much within earshot of your girlfriend or wife. Just saying.)

But speaking of happy marriages and relationships, weight loss can help there, too. According to a 2008 medical study, being overweight is also associated with problems of sexual function in men. Getting the extra fat off your body can boost your confidence and your mojo.

Most guys like a simple approach to getting healthy that yields fast results, and that’s why Medifast is great for men. You eat five Medifast meal replacements daily—one every two to three hours—and one “Lean & Green” Meal of lean protein and non-starchy vegetables. Your body goes into a mild fat-burning state that targets the body’s fat stores while helping you preserve more muscle tissue.

In addition to eating better, build your strength by exercising each day, whether by working out, playing sports, or doing some of your chores the old-fashioned way. Try a push mower instead of a gas-powered one, or attack your leaves with a rake instead of a leaf blower.

And be sure to get enough sleep, since sleep deprivation is associated with sugar cravings and more fat storage.

  1. Excellent article, Jennifer. I have lost a total of 24 pounds on this plan since March 4th. I have lost 3 inches off my waist, which has made a significant difference in my breath control while singing and I don’t get winded when climbing stairs.
